Alex and Eliza -
their story
A.A. Sawyer was a fifteen year old boy when he "saw the elephant" and became a veteran of the Battle of Shiloh - site of a terrible Civil War Battle where thousands of men were killed. Eliza Morris lived a few miles from the site of this battle. Born Elizabeth Ann Morris, daughter of Elijah Morris and his wife, born Mary Burchet, she was a civil war refugee who lost her entire family in that war. Photo on left is a Confederate Reunion, held in 1915 in Stephens County, Oklahoma. The women pictured here are widows of men who were killed in the Civil War. A. A. Sawyer is the next to last man (left to right) in the front row, holding his hat with both hands in his lap.
